Living the Lakeside Dream in Ambleside

submitted on 14 June 2023 by uklistings.org

A Love Affair with Nature

As I arrived in Ambleside, the charming village nestled on the shores of Lake Windermere, I couldn't help but think: I have a love affair with nature. It's the kind of love that makes you want to throw caution to the wind, pick up a tent, and shun all societal responsibilities for a life of uninterrupted lakeside canoodling. In Ambleside, it's easy to let that love affair blossom.

Exploring the Village

First things first, it's time to explore the village. Ambleside is home to a number of cozy pubs, eccentric shops, and a not insignificant number of sheep. Find yourself a local brew at the White Lion Inn, a pub that's been around since the 1600s, or make your way to The Giggling Goose Café for a spot of tea and an exceptionally tasty scone. You may also find yourself sidetracked by the many outdoor gear shops, art galleries, and the infamous Ambleside Rock Shop. The latter is a must-visit if you're looking to pick up a souvenir of your lakeside dream, such as a beautifully polished piece of rock. Trust me, it's more exciting than it sounds.

Onward to Adventure

Having had your fill of the village, it's time to venture towards the lake and the great outdoors. Whether you're a master hiker, a casual stroller, or an absolutely clueless rambler, Ambleside has something for everyone. The area is home to a number of walking trails, mountain paths, and just general outdoor wandering. I decided on the classic Fairfield Horseshoe walk, a moderate 11-mile loop that promises stunning views and possibly a few blisters. As I made my way along the trail, I couldn't help but marvel at the views. The green pastures, charming stone cottages, and Lake Windermere gleaming in the distance were a sight to behold. It's the kind of place that makes you think, "If I were a sheep, this is where I'd want to live." And from the number of sheep I encountered along the way, it seems I'm not alone in that sentiment.

By Land or By Water

While the walking trails of Ambleside are a delight, the real pièce de résistance is, of course, Lake Windermere. And what better way to explore the lake than by boat? I made my way down to the waterfront and rented a rowboat for the afternoon. As I pushed off from the shore, I briefly considered a career as a professional rower before promptly remembering that I am a writer with the upper body strength of a T-Rex. Nevertheless, I managed to make my way across the lake, admiring the scenery and desperately trying to ignore the blisters forming on my hands. For those less inclined to wield oars, there are also motorboat rentals and lake cruises available. Alternatively, rent a kayak or paddleboard to get up close and personal with the lake – just be prepared for the inevitable splash when you lose your balance.

Embracing the Lakeside Life

As the sun began to set, I found myself feeling a sense of kinship with the many waterfowl I encountered throughout the day. Ambleside has a way of making you feel connected to the natural world. Whether it's the serenity of the lake, the rugged beauty of the hills, or the irresistible charm of the village, living the lakeside dream seems like a life well-lived.So, how do you truly embrace the lakeside life in Ambleside? Here's what I recommend:
  • Immerse yourself in nature: Take a walk, row a boat, or simply sit by the water's edge and take it all in.
  • Indulge in local cuisine: Treat yourself to a hearty pub meal or a delicious scone at a quaint café.
  • Explore the village: Wander through the streets, visit the shops, and strike up a conversation with a friendly local.
  • Ignore your emails: Trust me, nothing can kill the lakeside dream faster than a full inbox.
As I reluctantly bid farewell to Ambleside and made my way back to the realities of modern life, I couldn't help but feel a pang of longing for my lakeside dream. And as I wistfully gazed out the window, a single thought crossed my mind: I wonder if they'd notice if I moved in with the sheep.
